The League of Scientists

Malene Curtina

Here’s where you get to meet us. I’m Malene. I love science, but my core science, my favorite, is biology. I formed the League of Scientists years ago. First, it was just me, Natsumi and Dev. It was a cool way for us to run experiments. Then we got more excited about science and wanted to really get things done. So we did: We started looking for mysteries to solve. We found a lot to keep us busy, and added more members, Kimmey and John.

I like to be with people. I know everyone’s different. That’s good, because it makes life fun. Sometimes it’s bad, because then people fight. But, you’ve got to help people get along, and figure out how to let them be different, while still letting them be the same. That probably sounds pretty crazy, right? That’s okay. It’s a pretty crazy world.

Science is almost everywhere. If it’s not, it should be. That’s where the League comes in.

Devin “Dev” Manuel

My name’s Devin, but I don’t think anyone has ever called me that. Ever. Well, except my mom, but that doesn’t count. Call me “Dev”. It’s less for you to write. You’re welcome!

My core science is tech. Computers, the Internet, and any cool toy with flashing lights. All those, yeah. Just give me anything with batteries or a power cord, and I’ll be happy. I can’t tell you how that stuff works – bug John about that – but I can show you how to use stuff to make life easier.

Cavemen were very grumpy people. You know why? No tools. No tech. Life is way better today. Yeah, Mr. Evil Scientist, technology causes problems too, but that’s your fault. Don’t blame the “Giant Laser of Destruction”. You’re the one who aimed it!

Tech is just a tool, and nothing’s perfect. We need people to use tools to fix problems. That’s me: I love investigating mysteries. Maybe when I have to get a job, that’s what I’ll do when I’m older. Is there a job for investigating weird mysteries? There better be.

When I’m stuck, I just remember: “There’s a tool for that.” Sometimes it takes longer to find the tool than it does to use it!

Natsumi Haru

I’m Natsumi. I’m a friend of Malene. A good friend, since we’ve been neighbors ever since I can remember. My core science is chemistry. Bubbling chemicals and glowing liquids and things that go ‘boom’. That’s pretty important stuff.

Kimmey talks about how math is so important too, and I guess she’s right. But, that’s like saying a bicycle frame is most important because it holds the bike together. It does, but that’s not as important as riding the bike. I don’t want to look at the frame. I want to pedal as fast as I can and feel the wind in my hair. That’s life, right? And if you learn chemistry, you learn about life.

John Hawkins

I’m John. I like electronics and making things. Everything from motors to microcontrollers, to spy equipment and robots. I’ve spent a lot of time doing this. My mom says I should be outside more, but I don’t see the point – sports are a waste of time.

Electronics is sweet, but I’ve heard people slam it. Like even though they use one every day, some people don’t know how a toaster works! I know how toasters work. I even built one. It was awesome, too – it was solar powered! Then it started a fire, and I wasn’t allowed to build one ever again. But, I sure toasted that loaf of bread.

I’m not like Malene – I’m not so outgoing. I’m not like Kimmey – I don’t want to get in someone’s way. Instead of cutting through the middle of a problem, I’d rather excuse myself and walk around it. I’m not like Dev – he always seems so relaxed. He’s everyone’s friend. I’m not that comfortable with people. I guess in a way, I don’t want a lot of friends. I’m probably the most like Natsumi, but even she’s more outgoing than I am. She just seems quiet, but I think it’s because she’s so polite: other people talk too much, and she’s just waiting for them to stop.

Kimmey Pryce

I’m Kimmey. I do math. Physics, too. Those are the cool ones. Everything else comes in second, because all science is pretty much just (yeah, you guessed it) physics and math.

You know how some people say, “I don’t want to play this game with you anymore, you’re too good!” I get that a lot. Trust me, it’s a compliment. I love puzzles and games. That fits with math, too. If you’re good at math, then you’re great at games. And puzzles. And mysteries.

Don’t keep people guessing. Seriously, it’s not cool and it slows things down. If you feel something, say it! Life moves faster when you push it like that. Don’t stop pushing.
